The devastating floods occurring in most basins and the water resource development projects have made it increasingly crucial to build timely and efficient flood forecast and control systems. The optimum use of water sources is critical for systematic operation of the development projects. The lower efficiency in exploitation of reservoirs due to hazardous flooding and aggravated costs of constructing emergency discharge systems have made it inevitable to build flood forecast and control systems as one of the most practical solutions to reduce damages and costs. In this paper, the system was designed and built using microcontroller, sensor, ultrasonic altimeter, radio transceiver circuits, microprocessor, and appropriate software.The system is installed at a proper height at the river mouth entering the reservoir. By collecting surface water samples, water level and the volume of the water entering the reservoir are determined and the information is sent to the central system. The transmitted information is received and analyzed in the central system. The electric motor or hydraulic devices open the gate of the dam (or gates, if necessary) intelligently and automatically. In that light, the exploitation of water in the reservoir can be managed and the dam safety is realized against floods.
