Abstract
With the increase in the world population, access to sufficient food, sufficient water and energy resources has become the most important global challenge and concern in recent decades. Providing sufficient food has caused significant pressure on water and energy resources. Agriculture, as the largest source of food production, is the most important consumer of water and energy, so a balance must be created between consumption and production. In this study, six indicators of water consumption, energy consumption, water mass productivity, energy productivity, water economic productivity, energy economic productivity and finally the Water, Energy, Food (WEF) index were used to determine the proposed cultivation pattern of five important agricultural crops of the Varamin irrigation network in the crop year (2020-2021). The results of data analysis showed that the calculated WEF for wheat, barley, alfalfa, fodder corn and rapeseed were 0.28, 0.32, 0.11, 0.87 and 0.33 respectively, with fodder corn having the highest and alfalfa having the lowest index. Considering the overall WEF index, a cropping pattern was proposed for the crops of the Varamin irrigation network. Considering the proposed cropping pattern, the cultivated area of alfalfa, wheat and barley decreased and the cultivated area of rapeseed and fodder corn increased.
