Abstract
Over the past few decades, due to human activities, industrialization and urbanization, air pollution and increased waste generation have become a life-threatening factor in many countries around the world. The detection and treatment of pollution, due to technological advances, represent some of the most important challenges facing the world today. The rapid increase in the quantity and complexity of data generated daily in the field of environmental science and engineering requires advances in data analysis.  Advanced data analysis approaches, such as machine learning, have become essential tools for uncovering hidden patterns or inferring correlations. A number of artificial intelligence approaches study the nonlinear behavior between inputs and outputs in chemical and biological processes, from predictive models to emerging optimization and control algorithms for pollutant removal processes and intelligent control systems. In the present study, the characteristics, advantages and limitations of artificial intelligence methods, including single and hybrid artificial intelligence methods, were investigated for environmental cleanup. In summary, the aim of the present study is to investigate different artificial neural networks in the wastewater treatment process to predict the efficiency of pollutant removal, evaluate the use of fuzzy logic for intelligent control of the aerobic stage of the wastewater treatment process, soft sensors with the help of artificial intelligence for accurate estimation of measurement parameters in wastewater treatment plants, and design of monitoring and early warning systems for aquatic and atmospheric environments, artificial intelligence modeling of solid waste generation, recycling and reduction of solid waste. The results of this study showed that modeling complex environmental problems using artificial intelligence technologies has become common in the environmental field, especially in wastewater treatment. Artificial intelligence technologies are widely used in dealing with problems related to wastewater, air pollution, and solid waste, and have bright future horizons.
