چکیده
Gabion stepped spillways (GSS) have been widely used to dissipate excess kinetic energy in hydraulic systems, particularly in erodible channels, due to their ease of construction, material availability, durability, and cost-effectiveness. GSS are primarily employed along rivers to protect streambeds and erosion-prone waterways. These spillways have gained significant attention among designers due to their energy dissipation efficiency, structural stability, and environmental compatibility, accommodating both overflow and underflow conditions. This study investigates the effects of slope and number of steps on flow characteristics, energy dissipation, and hydraulic jump properties at the downstream of GSS. For this purpose, 21 alternatives of GSS with three different steps (4, 6, 8), three different slopes (21.8°, 26.6°, 33.7°) were constructed and each alternative has conducted under five different flow discharge (30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 L/s). Total of 105 experiments were conducted, and the results indicate that GSS increases the energy dissipation by up to 81.5%. showing 9–20% higher dissipation than similar conventional stepped spillways (CSS) and 55–74.3% higher dissipation than the no step chute models. Additionally, reducing the number of steps and slope (provided that tumbling flow is maintained) enhances relative energy loss. On average, the reduction in the hydraulic jump length downstream of GSS was estimated at 44.1% for gabion models and 28.8% for CSS.
